How to Get an Awards Website You’ll Actually Want to Show Off

Published July 16, 2015 in Leadership

Creating an awards website is the first step an organization must take to prepare for the launch of its awards program. Even before you announce your call for entry or start planning your awards ceremony. Your website must be ready for the launch of the program because it is the face and source of all information that applicants will need to access.

But getting such an important facet of your program ready may seem scary. How are you supposed to get everything you need on there and make it the coolest looking website ever to grace the internet? After all, not everyone has the time or resources to make a top-of-the-line awards website. That’s okay.

The truth is, you don’t need to spend millions of dollars and hours to get a nice, effective website that will encourage visitors to apply. Here are 5 ways you can easily spruce up your awards website:

1. Include a Winners Gallery

Having historical data of your awards in a gallery is a nice thing for visitors to see, not just to look at, but also to get a better feel for your program. (Take a look at the website for The Oscars as an example.) Providing an archive of your awards adds to your legitimacy and prestige; by adding a gallery of winners, you are enticing entrants with the prize itself.

2. Make it Visually Appealing

Make sure the website is interesting and memorable. Having strong visuals on your website is essential to standing out in the fast-paced internet environment. Visuals greatly impact the likelihood of someone staying to read your content. However, you have to find a balance. Avoid dumping a barrage of gifs on the reader in favor of presenting a few bold statements. A photo of the winners, the logo of this year’s program, or well-organized information are all good ideas for a well executed graphic.

3. Review & Update Your Information

You’ve always got to keep your information updated so anyone who stumbles on it will be able to find what they need. Make sure all of the submission information is clear and concise. Review your website with the eyes of a stranger and see if there’s anything you could add to help entrants. (Remember: better instructions means better submissions.)

4. Simplify the Submission Process

The easier it is for someone to apply the more likely they are to do so. The submission page on your website should be clear and easy to find. Provide all dates, eligibility requirements, and links to the submission tool. Also include calls-to-action throughout the website where appropriate.

5. Let Someone Else Handle the Design

If you’re looking to spruce up your website’s look, but don’t have the time or design expertise on staff, don’t worry! There are several resources you can turn to. For example if you’re using a good awards management system, they can make the website for you, getting creative and eliminating the hassle for you!

Now you’re one step closer to getting that website into shape! Want to learn more about creating your perfect awards website? Check this out!
