Why Content Calendars are Important for Your Awards Social Media Marketing Strategy

Published June 17, 2014 in Leadership

Organizations are marketing on social media more than ever. It’s a great way to connect with your target audience in a place where they’re already spending their time! When organization interact with everyone on familiar ground it makes people feel like they can relate to and support this organization. Not only should you be engaging with your followers and sharing information about your organization, you should also be marketing your awards program on your social media profiles.

However, before you can begin optimizing your social platforms for your program, you’ve got to do some planning. Not as much fun as diving right into tweeting and such, I know, but it’s just as important as every other step in your planning process.

Failing to create a well-organized plan can lead to confusing content, poorly executed efforts, and an ultimately unsuccessful campaign. But it’s easy to turn that around and make your program a success: just grab a pen and some paper and start brainstorming with your team!

A content calendar serves to organize your thoughts and put them into a single place for planning and execution. Creating a log of tweets, for example, to send out throughout the duration of your awards program, will keep things organized, stop you from getting repetitive, or over-communicating (yes that’s possible). You want to be sharing fresh, current, and interesting content to your followers, and a content calendar is the best way to ensure you do that properly.

In order to create a content plan for your awards program you first need to answer some questions about the people you’re trying to reach:

  • Who is the audience for your awards program?
  • On which social platform are they spending their time?
  • What kind of information can you give them about your program?
  • Why are they going to be interested in this?
  • How much time do they spend on these sites and when are they most active?

A couple of these questions may be easy, especially if your program has been running for a long time or is in a specific niche of an industry. Great! The hard part’s over!

Once these questions are answered you can begin to craft content that will appeal to your audience and a calendar to relate this content in the best way possible.
