4 Reasons Why It’s Important to Have An Awards Program

Published February 5, 2014 in Leadership

We’re all familiar with the Oscars. It’s one of the most popular awards events in the world. People make movies, get nominated for numerous awards, dress up, go to this big event, and cry when they win (probably if they don’t too). And all of us normal people love to watch it all go down.

It’s a glamorous event in which the Academy recognizes people who are great at what they do and give everyone a chance to dress up, have fun, and revel in a job well done. So what’s so great about this and other awards ceremonies and why should we care?

Doesn’t everyone want to have fun and get recognized for their work? Of course they do! Here are 4 reasons why awards programs are important and why organizations should consider starting one if they haven’t already.

1. Member recognition

People like to know they’re being noticed and appreciated for the work they do, whether it’s your staff, dedicated volunteers, or members-at-large. Putting on an awards ceremony to celebrate their efforts shows appreciation for their work.

2. Builds member loyalty

By taking the time to honor members of your organization, you are building loyalty to your organization. People want to be part of something that they not only believe in, but also believes in them. Being recognized for your part in an organization will make you feel more invested in the organization and the role you play there.

3. Great marketing opportunity

Awards programs garner a lot of attention and give people something to get excited about. Preparing for and publicizing the event gives your organization a lot of opportunities to share information on various social media platforms: photos, awards galleries, calls for nominations, event reminders, videos (which also helps boost SEO).

4. Fun

And last, but not least…They’re fun! Awards events give everyone the chance to let loose and enjoy themselves. It’s a way to bond with other members of the organization and celebrate what you’re all about.
