OpenWater Team Member Wins Big at SRAA National Championship

Published June 3, 2015 in Leadership

Two weekends ago one of OpenWater’s team members, Greg Smith, won big at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s National Championship in Camden, New Jersey.

Greg began coaching the men’s varsity crew team at Bishop O’Connell High School (DJO) at the end of 2014 during the middle of land-training. Greg said about his coaching experience,”We hit the rowing machine pretty hard, then took full advantage of the short water time we had this spring. I think just staying positive, and meeting our goals led to this win. It was definitely a team effort.”

On Saturday May 23 the Men’s Varsity 4+ competed for the championship. According to Greg, the men were quickly up off of the starting blocks, and over the course of 1500 meters, only extended their lead. While a competing boat laid down a desperate sprint in the last minute of the race, the DJO men were able to hold them off, resulting in the crowning of the title of National Champions. This is the first National Championship in the history of DJO Crew.

“It has definitely been rewarding to be able to coach and work simultaneously. I think it brings a good balance to my professional life, letting me be a part of OpenWater, while still being involved with rowing,” Greg says.

When Greg isn’t coaching winning crew teams, he spends his time at OpenWater assisting with marketing materials, campaigns, and data analysis.
